Biology
Course Objective:
Biology is the study of living organisms. The biology class will compare and contrast the various forms of life. Students will analyze cellular processes that are necessary for life. Students will recognize the various activities that cells perform that require energy. Students will identify the different plant cell and animal cell organelles. Additionally, students will study DNA as a component of heredity and reproduction. As opportunities arise, students will discuss biologically relevant current events, such as outbreaks of diseases and scientific advances.
In addition to the formal study of biology, students will use written expression to convey their knowledge and understanding of biology. Students will present hypotheses, explain data, and draw conclusions in writing. Students will summarize sections of the text and organize these into notes. Notes may be used on quizzes and tests.
Course Outline:
Biology class will cover several topics. The most prominent topic will be cells, including cell reproduction, cellular respiration, cell organelles, and the transfer of energy through a living cell. Other topics are genetics, genetic engineering, heredity, proteins, and technological advances in these topics. Further, biology class will cover the origin of life, population growth, living communities, and ecological impacts on these communities. Biology class will also study the classification system as well as the plant and animal kingdoms.
Course Grading:
Biology requires participation, reading, writing, and research. Students are permitted and encouraged to use their notes on any assignment, quiz, or test. Students may not use their texts for tests and quizzes. Tests and quizzes may be retaken, but a conference with the instructor is required. Participation is assessed daily, so attendance will affect the grade. The semester grade is a combination of both nine weeks and a cumulative final exam. The nine week’s grade is determined by averaging daily grades, quizzes, and tests.

Physical Science
Physical Science is an introduction to the topics of chemistry, biology, and physics. Matter and the properties of matter are the backbone of the course. The students will study and utilize the patterns in the Periodic Table. Students will write chemical formulas for common ions, compounds, and molecules. Also, students will balance simple chemical equations. As part of their analysis of matter, students will investigate the various acids, bases, and salts. The motions of sub-atomic particles is key to understanding the properties of matter. Motion and work are in vestigated. Students will interpret changes in matter as a transfer of energy. Descriptions of energy transfer will be analyzed for sound, heat, and light properties. In addition to the text and investigations, students will study excerpts from current scientific publications.

Virtual Classroom information
Course objectives are determined by the instructor with the Michigan Virtual High School. As a mentor, I assist with any questions relevant to the course work or manipulating the technology for appropriate interaction with the course instructor. Course pacing is determined by the instructor and the student.
