Class Rules

All school rules will be followed in this room.  Each student has a right to a safe, orderly, and courteous environment.  Consequences for not following rules will be in accordance with the River Valley HS rules and procedures.

Be Prepared

  • Be here.
  • Be on time.
  • Have necessary materials ready including pencils!
  • Be physically ready: awake, nourished, hydrated, and have used the restroom before class.
  • Be mentally ready to take a quiz, answer questions, and work with others.
  • Have all work finished appropriately and on time.

Be courteous

  • Treat yourself and others with respect.
  • Keep conversation appropriate to school and relevant to the class.
  • Do not leave the class with out permission and a pass.
  • Help others whenever you can.
  • Treat the classroom, staff, students, and materials with respect.
  • Remain in your seat until you are excused to your next class.
  • Clean up after yourself, and your assigned area daily.

Work hard

  • Do your personal best each day.
  • Use your class time to your advantage.
  • If you are absent, find out what you missed upon your return.

English

Description:

The English class consists of three parts:  reading,, writing, and spelling.  Students are provided with the opportunity to increase their skills through a variety of formats.  Students will be graded on their performance both individually and through group efforts.

Objectives:

  • To learn prewriting and editing techniques for different formats.
  • To increase spelling ability through phonetics and structural analysis.
  • To develop reading comprehension skills for information and entertainment.
  • To become informed decision makers through written and spoken communications.

Various Novels/short stories/companion films & videos
Stack the Deck (Cahill & Hrebric)
New York Times (Newspaper)
Basic Goals in Spelling (Kottmyer & Claus)

Expectations:

Students are to be on time (in their seats) and prepared with materials including a pen or pencil.  Students are expected to participate in class, respect their fellow students, teachers, staff classroom, and materials.  Students are responsible for missed assignments and need to contact me upon return.

Study Skills

In this class you have the opportunity to work on assignments from other classes.  You will be able to do homework, study for tests, do research, and complete daily work.

You will also learn techniques to improve your skills, such as note taking, testing, time management, and organizational skills.

You are responsible for completing a daily assignment sheet.  Your entry needs to explain exactly what you did during the class period.  Include time spent, text, page #, etc…

A planner is required and will be checked daily for recording of other class assignments.

EXAMPLE:

7:35 – 7:50 – World Geography Ch. 2 Review 1-6, pg. 29
7:53 – 8:15 – Read Elements of Literature Book: “The Most Dangerous Game” pg. 13-16
7:18 – 8:30 - Completed Studyskills sheet – Abbreviations for Note Taking

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask for missing assignments.

Your grade is based on the above and the weekly point sheet.  It is your job to keep your work neat and organized.  That is part of Studyskills. Always come prepared with work.  Bring notes, text, and a book to read.  DO NOT FORGET A PEN OR PENCIL!!!!!

Transitional Living

Description:
Transitional Living is a class which concentrates on “how to work and live” after high school.

Objectives:
To strengthen students’ knowledge and understanding of:

  • Financial Responsibilities
  • Accessing Computer Knowledge/Technology In Our Lives

  • Post Secondary Educational Options
  • Other Transitional Areas: Marriage/Parenting/Learning Styles and Strategies
  • Current Day Information

Computers

Goals:

  • Practice to improve both accuracy and speed of keyboarding skills.
  • Learn to work efficiently and effectively in Microsoft Office applications.  You will learn about each of the following software applications:
    • Word – This word processing program has features that enable you to create documents such as a letter, a newsletter with graphics, or a report.
    • Excel – This spreadsheet program can be used to generate financial statements, charts, lists of data, and graphs.
    • PowerPoint – This presentation program enables you to create exciting slides and printouts that will help you give and informative and memorable presentation.
    • Students will also explore the Publisher and Access programs.
    • Instruction in internet reseach and usage.
    • Awareness of internet behaviors.
  • Special attention will be given to individual IEP goals related to technology.

Attendance:

  • Excellent attendance is expected.  If you are absent or do not finish your daily work, you can make an appointment to come after school to make up your work.  You can also do warm-up drills at home if you are absent.
  • Be on time.  I follow the school handbook policy on Tardies.  (See handbook page 14.)

Classroom Rules & Responsibilities:

  • Absolutely NO E-mail, chat rooms, live journals, blogging, or downloading off the Internet. The use of the Internet is not permitted without teacher permission.  Net sending or any form of communication to other students through the use of computer will not be allowed.  No changing of settings on the computer including the desktop and screen saver.
  • Be in your seat when class starts.  You are expected to begin working when you come into class.
  • Treat others (teacher and classmates) with respect.  We will not use the words like shut-up, stupid etc… in the classroom.  There is no name calling, making fun of others or inappropriate language.
  • If you wish to answer a question, ask a question, or make a comment relevant to class discussion, please raise your hand and wait before making a reply.  Do not shout out to get my attention.
  • No excessive talking in class.  Academic Honesty:  Please know and follow the school’s academic honesty policy.  (See handbook page 30.)
  • The teacher’s desk is off limits to any student.
  • Water will be permitted.

Materials: A double pocket folder will be provided for your use in class.  Keep all handouts that I give you in your folder, including your record sheets.  These folders will be kept in the room.

Please have the following materials for class:

  • Pencil or pen
  • Notebook paper to take notes
