Tessellation

Tessellations are repeating patterns that don't overlap or leave gaps. Not all shapes can tessellate. Circles, for instance, will always leave gaps when trying to tessellate.
History
Tessellations have been used throughout history to decorate buildings and make tiled floors. They are also important in the study of shapes and how things fit together (think Tetris).
