Mr. Sullivan

email: rsullivan@rivervalleyschools.org

  Phone:  (269)756-9541 Ext. 1132

We have newly installed bleachers. Students are NOT to climb on them nor vandalize them. All PE classes with Mr. Sullivan will meet for attendance in Room C-4 and then be dismissed to the gym.

No radios, phones, electronic games, or any other such electronic devices are to be brought to gym class. You do not need them for PE class participation. If you bring any of these items, they will be confiscated and turned in to the office staff at the END of the teacher's work day.

General HS P.E.9/Health: This physical education class is a one-year (primarily 9th grade students) co-ed class, which will also include various health topics to be covered as time permits. Normally we schedule a 9-week Health unit in the classroom during the 3rd 9-week marking period. All students enrolled in this class will offered the State mandated HIV/STD training in accordance with the PA 226 committee recommendations. Each student will have the opportunity to “opt out” of the HIV/STD training with written parent/guardian permission.
The physical education aspect of this class will include but not be limited to: softball, football, soccer, physical fitness testing, table tennis, strength training and conditioning (introductory level), basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, track and field, initiative activities, bowling, and lifetime activities such as golf, tennis, and jogging. Weather and/or money permitting, we will also offer a cross-country skiing unit as well as a CPR unit taught by guest experts in their respective fields.

M.S. Sports PE 7/8: This class is open to both 7th and 8th grade students. The class runs for quarter sections (usually 9 weeks long) throughout the year. Students may sign up for more than one quarter. This class will cover seasonal sports depending on the particular quarter you are enrolled. Most major sports will be covered in addition to lifetime activities. If weather, time and money permits we may have a cross-country skiing unit in the winter quarter. That unit would be taught by professionals from Sarett Nature Center.

6th grade PE experience: This class is designed to complement the 6th grade experience of PE, Art, and Band. This class is a Credit/No Credit class. No letter grades will be given. It is a participatory class in which the students are expected to participate daily. In addition, all students will be given the opportunity to earn a Presidential Fitness Award covering the 5 tests in that program. The tests are as follows: Mile Run, Sit and Reach, Shuttle Run, Pull Ups, and Sit Ups. A student must score at the 85th percentile on each test in order to win the award.

General Information For All Physical Education and MS Sports Classes:

The aim of the Health and Physical Education curriculum is to assist students in developing and maintaining attitudes, skills, and health habits that will lead to an adult life-style that is active, healthy, and fulfilling, both mentally and physically. With the rise of obesity in this country we feel it is adamant that we address these issues in our schools and our community by giving our students these necessary tools.

Grades in P.E. courses are based upon such factors as: participation level, putting forth one’s best effort at all times, proper hygiene, work ethic, improvement, cooperation with each other and the instructor, establishing a degree of self-discipline and developing a wholesome and positive attitude. In addition there will be written and practical tests in various units.

1.) You are expected to dress in clothes appropriate for gym and participate. Participation means taking part in both the warm-up cals and the activity of the day. Clothing must be within the dress code of the student handbook, however hats, coats/hoodies, and sunglasses are permissible for OUTSIDE activities if the weather is cooler or the sun is a factor in your vision. Shorts ARE appropriate for gym class. Appropriate gym shoes are ones that are non-marking soles. We take pride in our gym floor. SANDALS, FLIP FLOPS, etc.. are NOT appropriate foot wear.
2.) Each dress/participation day is worth a maximum 10 points. Failure to dress or participate may result in a detention being issued.

3.) If you are too sick to take gym, then you are probably too sick to be in school. (See student handbook.)
4.) Students with WRITTEN MEDICAL EXCUSES will be given an exemption from participation on a particular day but they may be required to do a written assignment for PE credit that day. Students with long-term medical excuses should see the counselor for a schedule change.
5.) Twice a year, in the Fall and in the Spring you will be given an opportunity to earn a Presidential Fitness Award. Those who qualify in the top 85% on all 5 tests are eligible for this award. The 5 tests are: pull-ups, sit-ups, sit and reach, shuttle run, and one mile run.  ALL STUDENTS WILL BE TESTED IN THESE 5 AREAS.
6.) Locks and lockers are available for PE classes. If you wish to rent a combination lock you must pay a rental fee at the office. YOU ARE STRONGLY URGED NOT TO LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE IN YOUR GYM LOCKERS DURING CLASS OR OVERNIGHT. THIS INCLUDES VALUABLE GYM SHOES AND GYM CLOTHES.
Unfortunately, we are not immune from thefts in the locker rooms.
7.) Weather permitting, we will go outside as much as possible for all PE classes. Therefore dress appropriately. Don’t hesitate to bring a sweatshirt, jacket, gloves, or hat when the weather is cool or cold. COLD WEATHER DOES NOT MEAN WE WON’T GO OUTSIDE. SO ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR THE WEATHER.
8.) Your student handbook rules and Mustang Basic Rules apply in PE classes as well as other classes however there are some dress code exceptions (see above).

9.) Showers and shower time will be made available at the end of each class (except the 6th grade experience). Bring your own towels and soap.
