SO MUCH TO BE GRATEFUL FOR HERE IN RIVER VALLEY! I love this time of year as we celebrate the holidays and all they represent, like generosity, gratefulness, family, faith, and love. One of the favorite things about my job is I get to circulate around our schools and see so many wonderful things happening for kids. Here are some highlights I saw in the last week: I was so impressed by our elementary kids as they sang and danced their hearts out in Celebrations Around the World. It was such fun to see our elementary kids gaze with wonder at a very jovial Santa Claus and his amazing "dream team" of elves. Our MHS band and choir kids sang and played the songs of the holidays that knit communities together building bonds and connections. This is essential for the development of children, so they feel a part of something bigger…and not just a screen. I got to see our Advance Earth Science class presenting their final semester projects and was blown away by their poise, organization, critical thinking, and communication skills. It reminded me of one of our belief statements: Our students can. We can. I'm seeing our custodians pitch in and do what needs to be done to set up for events such as games and concerts and still get the school clean for the next day. Our amazing bus drivers brave the winter roads with professionalism and care to transport our kids to and from school so they can learn and thrive. I love watching our coaches develop our kids work ethic and teamwork skills and our kids doing their best for the good of their team. Did you know our food service staff served 10,844 meals this past summer? We are indeed fortunate to have that team keeping our kids well fed. Our administrators and office staff do amazing work to organize, solve problems, uphold standards and support our educators so our kids can be empowered to successfully live, work, and thrive in a global economy, as our vision calls for.

ACILITY IMPROVEMENT UPDATE We are continuing to make progress on our Strategic Plan goal of continually improving our facilities to ensure an excellent learning environment. As you likely know, we are replacing many doors in the MHS. Almost all the new doors are installed in the MHS, despite unforeseen circumstances, such as doors being damaged during shipment. At our November 24 Board Meeting, the existing parking lot was approved for design and bidding. Also approved for design and bidding was the replacement of the planter with curbing and possibly a decorative fence, as well as replacement of sidewalks on the northside of our school. The board also approved design and bidding for widening the driveway near the south driveway to provide more room for parent pickup/drop-off. At our December 8th Work Session, the board approved designing and seeking bids to replace the older sections of sidewalk on the east (front) side of our school. The plan for the south/construction parking lot is to return it to grass and close the driveway to the lot this summer when the rest of the construction is occurring. Approving the design and bidding does not mean the work has been approved. It's an important step in the process as it allows the Board to make decisions based on actual bids, rather than estimates. Key decisions will be made when the bids come in this winter and the board will decide which projects to actually complete this summer. We are hopeful that the bids will come back favorably, so we will be able to complete more work to improve our facilities in order to help create an excellent learning environment as called for in our Strategic Plan. Our architects have focused their capacity on the parking areas and will be starting a more comprehensive Facility Condition Assessment and Master Facility Plan which will guide our facility improvement in the years to come. We know that the Facility Condition Assessment will shine a light on many facility issues we have to resolve so we are approaching these facility improvements frugally as we need to stretch our dollars as far as they can go.
BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK I am sure many of you are aware of Blessings In A Backpack, which is a wonderful organization that supports families who face food insecurity. During this time of increased food insecurity, it is extra important to support organizations such as Blessings in a Backpack who help keep our students fed so they can learn and grow.
